Now is a good time to some maintenance work on them overworked mowers.

Things you should be looking at is:

  • wobbly or loose wheels which can lead to uneven cutting and scalping
  • Blunt or damaged blades which can tear the blades of the lawn which in turn can cause disease and affect the lawns appearance
  • Make sure you are not using old fuel and you are using the right fuel for your type of mower.

You have to make sure that you do not mow your lawn too low as this can really damage and put stress on your lawn which leads to the appearance of weeds, which is not a good look.Below are some mowing guidelines you should follow. You should use the higher height in winter and the lower height in summer:

  • All types of Buffalo’s……………………….3-5cm
  • All types of couches……………………….1.5-3cm
  • Kikuyu…………………………………………3-5cm

If you have your lawn at a high height at the moment be sure not to go in and mow it on a low setting straight away. You have to get it down to the desired height gradually by lower the blades slowly over a period of time.
